MOVING TERMS: WHAT ARE NON-TRANSPORTABLE ITEMS?
From 2020 to 2021, 21,000 people from Ontario moved to British Columbia, and Kelowna saw a population increase of almost 7,000 people. It's clear that this city is a huge draw for people, both near and far. This year, you might be considering a move, yourself. Whether you're moving across the province, or coming from the other side of the country, it can be stressful when you don't have all the moving information you need. When you're moving items to Kelowna, it's important to know what you can and can't transport. Read on to find out more about non-transportable items.
WHAT ARE NON-TRANSPORTABLE ITEMS?
Non-transportable items are things that movers won't put in their vans and transport. This is due to federal laws, as well as individual company policies. To avoid trouble on your moving day, you should pack items carefully beforehand.
PRICELESS PERSONAL BELONGINGS
If you have anything that'd be devastating to lose in your move, then take extra care in transporting them to a new location. Make sure they are easy to find, and clearly marked as fragile. Consider labeling them by the room they belong in. Consider keeping priceless valuables with you during your move and transport these items yourself. Examples here include legal papers, cash, moving documents, jewelry, family photos, devices, and personal collections (such as cards or coins).
HAZARDOUS ITEMS
Hazardous items are things that may cause harm to anyone around them, as they're either explosive, corrosive, flammable, or radioactive. They can be physical, biological, or chemical. Most movers cannot transport these items. Some hazardous items have useful everyday purposes, such as cleaning chemicals, gasoline, propane cylinders, paint, lighter fluid, matches, and oxygen bottles. Other examples include fireworks, radio-pharmaceuticals, and auto repair chemicals and solvents.
MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
If you have firearms and ammunition, confirm in advance of the move that the moving company can transport them. You should also avoid loading perishable foods, especially items that are stored in glass. All it takes is one wrong move for a huge mess. Don't put prescription medications in a moving van either. These usually need to have regulated temperatures; which vans won't have.
WHAT TO DO WITH NON-TRANSPORTABLE ITEMS
For personal items, you should put them in the car you're travelling in so you have eyes on them at all times. If you're not driving, then have these things on your person. As for hazardous and miscellaneous items, you need to assess the pile. Determine if they're worth taking along to your destination. Discard them properly if needed; otherwise, you can take on the risk and transport them yourself.
