HOW TO PREPARE FOR MOVING DAY

If you have moved from one home to another, then you know how chaotic it can be. There are a lot of boxes that have to be checked off while successfully relocating from one place to another. It can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

At Precisely Right Moving and Storage, we have managed the safe packaging and transportation of our clients’ valuables for over 22 years. Whether it’s for businesses or families, we are experienced in all types of moves.

Here are 10 tips that our expert staff have prepared to make your moving day less hectic:

Tip 1: Have everything ready and keep a list

If professional movers are hired, ensure that the boxes are easily accessible, so the time taken to move out is minimized.

Tip 2: Label clearly

Ensure that you label the contents of all boxes carefully. Essential items should be packed together and marked “Open first/Load last” on each box. This will make it easier to unpack important items first. Fragile and valuable items should also be labelled and packed separately. If you don’t have time for packing, Precisely Right Moving is there to help.

Tip 3: Get rid of all unwanted stuff

The weight of your overall shipment will have an impact on the relocation bill. This means the fewer items you decide to move, the less money you will have to pay. Make a list of all the items in your house you don’t think is worth moving and get rid of them before you move.

Holding a garage sale or supporting local charities are good options. Try to do this at least a week prior to moving day.

Tip 4: Be ready for your movers

Try to get up early and make sure you are ready by the time your movers arrive.  Defrost your refrigerator and freezer at least 48 hours before moving them. Also, take down your curtains, curtain rods and window coverings.

Tip 5: Re-establish your utilities at your new home

Disconnect your utilities such as cable TV, telephone, and gas at your old address. Do not forget to re-establish them at your new address Discuss with your post office to have all your mail forwarded to the new address.

Tip 6: Pack for your first day at your new home

Moving day can be tiring. You might be exhausted at the end of the day and won’t want to unpack at the new location right away. Ensure that you pack essentials such as pyjamas, toiletries and paper plates separately in a bag. This will allow you to be ready for your first day at a new place, without having to go through your things.

Tip 7: Ensure that your electronic devices are charged

During the day, situations might arise where you have to talk to your family members regarding certain items. You might even have to finish your office tasks if you have decided to work from home on moving day. The last thing that you need is to have a dead phone or a laptop.

Tip 8: Food preparation

This will help you satisfy your hunger after a tiring day of moving. You can also have something to snack on during the entire process. Ordering out is an option but this can help you save a few dollars.

Tip 9: Take care of your kids and pets

Things can get a little complicated if you are moving in with a child or a pet without preparation. In addition to worrying about their safety, you will have to ensure they do not disturb the movers and knockdown boxes. The best option is to keep kids and pets away during moving day.

Tip 10: Relinquish control and trust your movers

Even though the moving team will never be rude or impolite, it is best to keep interruptions to a minimum. Unless you have something valuable to be packed in a specific manner, or you see a serious issue, it’s better to let the movers do their job. Trust their expertise and let them work efficiently.
